CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING ■
Other Batch Settings
The final four Batch Capture settings allow you to either use the compression settings
as logged in the bin or change them to your current settings for media creation. Let’s
take an example of why you might want to adjust these settings. A director comes to
you with what appears to be a very simple documentary and only 10 tapes. You log the
10 tapes and intend to digitize at DV resolution. No worries, you have plenty of space
on the drives. Then the other shoe drops. The director comes in with 40 more tapes,
explaining, “Here’s the bulk of what we’ll use.”
Has it happened to you? It has to me. This usually occurs when either the direc-
tor is less organized and “forgets” or when he or she chooses not to disclose enough
information to you. As a result, you will have logged all your footage as DV compres-
sion and when you’re going to need to do it at 15:1s in order to fit it on your drives
(your actual mileage will vary).
Go to your Batch Capture Settings and deselect Use Video Compression Logged
For Each Clip. Set your Capture tool for 15:1s and delete all the media from your
original clips. Batch capture them again at 15:1s and you can finish the project without
worrying about drive space. You can also use these settings to adjust for audio sample
rate, for sample size, and for the tracks selected. Capturing Tracks Logged is extremely
useful. The logger often has no clue about what should be captured and so will log all
the tracks available for the clip. As you begin to familiarize yourself with the footage
for the project, you might notice that some tapes have no sound and capturing sound
will waste space. By deselecting this option and picking tracks in the Capture tool, you
can save a lot of disk space.
To batch capture using logged bins:
1. Choose your Batch Capture Settings, as described previously.
2. Open the bin with the logged clips.
3. Select the clips to be batch captured. Make sure that you have selected the cor-
rect drive(s), video resolution, and audio sources.
4. Ready for some automated fun? Under the Bin menu, select Batch Capture.
5. The system instructs you to load a tape and begins to capture material automati-
cally. From there, follow the system prompts. When complete, it will tell you
“Batch Capture Complete.”
Note: If you are using XpressPro and you want to make sure that you have enough space on the drives to
capture all your logged shots, you can select them all in the bin (Ctrl+A/F+A) and then press Ctrl+I/F+I
(“I”stands for “info”).This will open up the Console and display the total length of shots that were selected.
Make sure that no titles or sequences were selected, or it will add in those lengths for the totals.
