A TOUR OF THE INTERFACE
interface is limited only to Xpress Pro. With Free DV, you can customize the interface
window displays, but not the individual buttons on each component of the interface,
Let’s take a few moments and go over each component and its functions.
The Project Window
The Project window is something of a master key for each project created. When you
close the Project window, it closes everything else associated with the project. From
that point, you can either open another project or quit the program.
The Project window contains four tabs: Bins, Settings, Effects, and Info.
Bins Tab
The Bins tab (see Figure 3.10) contains a Fast menu to perform bin functions, a New
Bin button, a memory display, and a list of bins that also displays the bin status (open
or closed),
The Fast menu has long been a main staple of the Avid interface. This icon
, also known as the hamburger (although it looks nothing like a hamburger), is
used to display a multiple-selection pull-down menu. Click it, and a number of func-
tions will appear.
On the Bins tab, the hamburger displays Open Bin, New Bin, New Folder, Close
Project, Delete, Empty Trash, Reveal File, and Flat View. The first two functions are
self-explanatory. The third, New Folder, allows you to subcategorize bins.
Bin management is just like database management. Some editors use very little of
it and do not take advantage of the advanced functions of bin management; others use
all the capabilities of bins, including subcategorization, customized displays, column
entries (Xpress Pro only), and so on.
