Loading Clips

Let’s take a look at the first and only clip in the bin: Tin Drawers. Double-click the

clip; it should load in the left (Source) monitor. If the source appears in a pop-up moni-

tor, choose Toolset

> Source/Record Editing so the two monitors appear side by side.

Click the Play button underneath the Source monitor and listen to the story. As

you can see, there’s some work that can be done to move the story along a little faster.

The duration of the story is one minute and 49 seconds, but we don’t have that much

time for this anecdote. So we’re going to go through this story bit by bit and clean it up

by editing in the parts that comprise the story and leaving out those that don’t.

Marking Clips

Now that you’ve heard the Tin Drawers story, do you understand it? I purposely used

subjects from the U.K. for these tutorials because their accents can be challenging to

decipher. Also, the story is drawn out way too much, with a lot of parenthetical detail

that we can do without. So let’s start by going back to the beginning of the clip. Click

the Source monitor, and press the Home key on your keyboard. This should bring the

clip back to the beginning.

Now we want to mark the beginning of the story. Just where does this story

begin? Play it back again until you hear “She came to one....” We’ll need to mark an in

point (see Figure 3.55) right before the word “she.” First, try marking the clip when

playing it back at normal speed. Try to mark an in point before he says, “She came to

one.” If you don’t think you came close enough, try it again until you get the rhythm

or cadence of his voice.
