CHAPTER 2: CAPTURING
Duration The Duration icon has both a Mark In and Mark Out icon together. Actu-
ally, it isn’t a button at all. This is Xpress Pro’s calculation of the duration of your clip
based upon the Mark In and Mark Out. If you adjust either Mark In or Mark Out,
the number in this register will change. You can also do direct entry of timecode in the
Duration register. For example, if you have a Mark In and you want the clip to be
20 seconds long, type 20:00. The Mark Out will be calculated based upon your dura-
tion. You can also do this inversely to back-time a clip with Mark Out already entered;
enter the desired duration in the register, and the Mark In will be calculated based
upon the Mark Out minus the duration.
Storage Register The last entry on the Marks register is a temporary storage place for
a timecode number to be used later. You can mark this timecode using the adjacent
Locator button to the left of the register or manually enter the timecode by clicking in
the register and typing in the number.
Go To (Cue) On the Mark In, Mark Out, and Storage registers, there is a button just
to the right of the register with an arrow. Clicking this button will cue your tape to the
timecode that is entered into that register.
Clear Marks Clicking one of the buttons at the far right will clear the timecode from
the relevant register.
Capturing Using Mark In and Mark Out Points
Capturing using marked points offers the convenience of doing two things at once: log
and capture. Although this once was prohibitive on more-expensive nonlinear editing
systems (because of the cost per hour of renting or maintaining the system), it’s pretty
common on less-expensive systems such as Free DV or Xpress Pro.
To capture using Mark In and Mark Out:
1. Find the first frame of the footage to be digitized and click the Mark In button
on the Capture tool.
2. Find the last frame of the footage to be digitized and click the Mark Out button.
3. Press the Capture button at the top-left of the dialog.
The system prerolls the tape to a specified point a few seconds before the in
point, rolls it forward, and begins capturing. After the capture is completed, the system
sends a message that the media has been digitized.
You can also digitize footage with no set out point. Simply click Mark In
and press Record. When you’re sure you’ve captured enough for that clip, press the
Capture button a second time to stop capturing. Similarly, you can set an out point
for your capture (for example, before a timecode break or the tape end) and not
mark an in point by using the Capture button to capture on the fly wherever the
tape is cued.
