CHAPTER 5: TRIMMING
Some editors, and even more producers, can’t stand the Trim Play loop. Remember
that it is only a tool to gauge how well the transition plays. If you’d rather not use it,
you can always switch back to Source/Record mode and play it back normally within
the context of an entire scene.
Now, let’s take a look at the three elements that you can trim: the A side, the B
side, and both the A and B sides.
A-Side Source Trimming
When you trim the A or outgoing side of a transition, you monitor the image on the
left monitor. When you’re in Trim mode, clicking on the A-side monitor tells your sys-
tem that you’re trimming only on the A side. The track selectors on the Timeline below
determine which tracks are to be trimmed.
After you begin trimming in this way, you will not affect anything on the B side—
all picture and audio segments will be intact. However, keep in mind that when you
trim only one track, such as audio channel 1, the location of that element will change
so that it comes earlier or later in the sequence, depending on which way you trim. It
could make some or all of the sequences go out of sync, which we’ll discuss later. If all
tracks are being trimmed on the A side (see Figure 5.6), the B side remains intact and
in sync, but it will appear either earlier or later in the sequence—again depending on
which way you trim.
