GLOSSARY
FireWire The international hardware and soft-
ware standard for transporting data at speeds
of up to 400 megabits per second (Mb/s)
(1394a) or up to 800 megabits per second
(Mb/s) (1394b). Also known as iLink (Sony
trademark) 1394 or IEEE 1394.
flare Stray light that is usually reflected from
a medium, but is not part of an image.
flash frame Short unwanted frames. Also
refers to an effect in which a small number
of frames are added for impact. With an
Avid system, an editor can use the Find Flash
Frame command to find these bits.
flatbed A film-editing system for playing back
conformed workprint. Flatbeds are flat tables
with viewing screens attached. Most common
are KEMs and Steenbecks.
flex Also known as flex files or Aaton files, a
telecine log format whose files end with an
.flx suffix.
foley The background sounds and effects
added by foley artists during audio sweeten-
ing to increase realism.
format 1. To prepare a disk drive or floppy
disk for use. 2. A specific form that a
sequence must follow, or a show format used
in a television series, such as a tease, three
acts, and a conclusion.
formatting The transfer and editing of mate-
rial to form a complete program, including
any of the following: countdown, test patterns,
bars and tone, titles, credits, logos, space for
commercial, closed captioning, and so forth.
4:1:1 Subsampling rate of NTSC DV,
DVCAM, DVC PRO, and PAL DVCPRO.
4:2:0 Subsampling rate of PAL DV and
DVCAM.
4:2:2 A subsampling rate used in video images.
The higher the number, the better the sample.
Higher numbers also create higher data rates,
larger file sizes, and more complex pictures.
The first number refers to the luminance of
the picture. Second and third numbers refer
to color. Sometimes a fourth number is also
included, which refers to a key or alpha
channel. See subsampling. 4:2:2 is the sub-
sampling rate for formats such as Digital
Betacam, DVCPro50, and D9.
fps Acronym for frames per second. Used to
measure video or film playback rates.
frame One complete video picture. A frame
normally contains two video fields, scanned
at the NTSC rate of approximately 30 fps or
the PAL rate of 25 fps.
frame offset 1. A way of indicating a particu-
lar frame within the group of frames identi-
fied by the edge number on a piece of film.
For example, a frame offset of +12 indicates
the 12th frame from the frame marked
by the edgecode or key code. 2. The number
of frames needed to delay the playback of a
FireWire-based signal to maintain sync with
an external monitor. 3. In master-slave terms,
the number of frames of timecode that differ
in the master-slave relationship.
frame pulse A pulse emitted to the control
track signal.
frame synchronizer A device that converts non-
synchronous video sources into timed sources
through capture of entire frames. Also referred
to as a frame shaker.
freeze frame A video or film effect that
appears to stop the action through continu-
ous playback or integration of the same
single frame.
