contains the first frame of the next shot following the slipped shot. As you slip the shot
forward or backward, only frames 2 and 3 will update because frame 1 and frame 4
are not changed through slipping.

Sliding
Sliding does just the opposite of slipping, affecting adjacent scenes. Here’s an example of
sliding: We’re editing a program in which we have a studio discussion, which leads to a
previously edited “roll-in” tape. As we’re editing our production, the director becomes
aware that we have left the studio a little too abruptly and have returned to the studio too
early, with a little bit of “egg on the face” of our studio panel before they begin to speak.
In this scenario, we would normally extend the studio shot a few frames before
putting in the edited piece. Then we would go to the tail transition, in which the edited
piece goes back to the studio and trims forward some of the B side of the transition so
the action from the tape to the studio is continuous.
A faster way is to use the Slide function (see Figure 5.16).

To enter Slide mode, Shift+Alt/Option-drag to lasso from right to left covering
the entire segment to be slid. If you want to slide over a series of shots, drag the lasso
around the end of the last segment to be slid and continue until it is around the begin-
ning of the first segment to be slid. Like Slip mode, you can control sliding using all the
trim methods described previously, including J-K-L.
An alternate way to enter slide is through the Timeline contextual menu. While
in Trim mode, place your cursor over the segment you want to slip and either right-
click (Windows) or Shift-Ctrl-click (Macintosh) to reveal the Timeline menu. You can
choose Select Slip Trim or Select Slide Trim on the menu.
Like slipping, slide trimming displays four monitors. The first is the tail of the
outgoing scene, which is adjusted in Slide mode. The second monitor is the first frame
