■ USING A DECK FOR CAPTURE

Some transcoders offer balanced audio connections. The Mojo, however, does

not (see Figure 2.13). Adapting a balanced signal to an unbalanced one can be haz-

ardous at best. In some cases, the audio signal can cancel itself out completely. In other

cases, you might notice some loss of the signal at certain frequencies. If this happens,

you’ll need to get a transformer so that the signal can properly conform from balanced

to unbalanced.

I’ve used adapters from balanced to unbalanced signals quite a few times with-

out need of a transformer, and although there is an occasional drop in levels, I rarely

have had the signal cancel out. Your results may vary.

Selecting the Best Quality Video

Before you begin the process of capturing, you’ll want to determine the best quality

video to send to your system. Many decks and cameras offer a variety of video output,

including FireWire, S-Video component, and composite video (see Figure 2.14).
