■ THE AVID PRODUCT LINE
and Meridien resolution media with other current media types such as DV25. Mojo
offers a limited selection of both Meridien resolutions and other current media types.
So what makes these systems work so well? Nobody seems to know the secret.
It’s all in that little box. I use Mojo, which connects to my Xpress Pro system via a
common FireWire connection. The box has worked perfectly since I started with it. It’s
simple to connect and can create uncompressed video from any source. Sometimes I stare
at my Mojo and wonder what it is actually doing. But most of the time I just use it.
This “magic box” technology is a little weird at first, but once you get used to it
and see the results, it can pretty much go unnoticed. Although Avid made certain that
we understood that we could now use our Adrenaline and Mojo boxes with faster,
more efficient computers, I am sure that they have not cut their own throats by ending
their product lines. Still to come is the introduction of an advanced Mojo, high-defini-
tion standards, and whatever else the industry might bring. Every new incarnation
promises the “be-all-and-end-all” product, but it never really ends.
If you are currently using Free DV, none of these particular systems applies.
What you have is a very basic Avid system without benefit of DNA acceleration. You
cannot attach a Mojo to Free DV. But you can always upgrade to Xpress Pro, which is
a more elaborate Avid with better features. For now, you’ll learn about how Free DV
works. But first, let’s explore the process of editing.
Avid has a lot of different solutions for editors. You can compare all of the
models here:
